Supporting Students with Disabilities: Learning from Cases
— Reasonable Accommodation and Everyday Practice as Considered from the Social Model —
As part of our efforts to advance the creation of a “Ritsumeikan Academy that realizes Diversity & Inclusion,” as set forth in the Ritsumeikan Academy Vision R2030, we held a DE&I seminar for faculty, teachers, and staff.
Drawing on practices at the Disability Resource Center (DRC), the seminar deepened participants’ understanding of the social model of disability and reasonable accommodation. Through case studies based on hypothetical scenarios, participants reconsidered established practices and assumptions, recognized the difficulties that students may experience, and explored appropriate responses, environmental adjustments, and ways of connecting students with support according to their individual circumstances. The seminar combined lectures and individual activities.
